If you are experiencing discomfort or sudden pain in your jaw, clicking or grating noise when you open your mouth and chew, an ache in front of your ear/facial area, a locking jaw, difficulty opening and closing your jaw symmetrically or asymmetry/unevenness in your bite, you may have TMJ dysfunction.

Misalignment in the joint, damage to the jaw cartilage caused by arthritis, poor posture in the neck or head, and occlusal problems such as poor bite, asymmetrical or retrognathic (underbite, overbite) can all cause TMJ dysfunction.

In the meantime, there are some things you can do to alleviate your discomfort, such as eating soft foods, avoiding clenching the jaw or opening the jaw too wide, and wearing a mouthguard while sleeping to prevent jaw clenching or teeth grinding.
